At BSH, we believe that the greatest challenges are best overcome through collaboration. Food waste is one of those major global challenges, and to address it, we are proud to lead the European project, SERENADE. This initiative is more than just a research project; it is a clear example of our commitment to open innovation and sustainability.
SERENADE brings together an international consortium of universities, research centers, and companies to develop smart solutions that help us better preserve food. The goal is to create technologies that could one day be integrated into our home appliances, such as sensors capable of “smelling” food freshness or advanced packaging materials that extend its shelf life.
The heart of the project is its people. Through our YouTube channel, we wanted to share the journey of SERENADE from the inside. In our video series, the three BSH coordinators who have led the project—Lander Rojo, Andrés Escartín, and Pablo Dolado—explain the initial vision, management challenges, and the evolution of this complex initiative. As Sergio Gómez, Head of Shared Services at BSH, highlights, “SERENADE is a strategic opportunity to tackle major technological challenges more efficiently and creatively through collaboration.”
The project is already bearing fruit. The young doctoral researchers we are training are presenting their progress in top-tier forums. For instance, Hadi Saniei has showcased recently his innovations in bioplastic materials at the prestigious European Bioplastics Conference 2025: in his paper entitled “Reduced-Energy Processing of PLA/Talc Biocomposites: Comparing In-Mold Crystallization and IR Annealing” he has compared two approaches to boost PLA crystallinity finding a way to reduce energy consumption in the process more that 40% with the proposed new method (we need good crystallinity to have a durable container to be cleaned in the dishwasher).
This is the path of innovation at BSH: uniting talent, fostering collaboration, and developing the science that will shape the homes of the future. A future that is more sustainable and has less waste.
