Can a compostable package also be durable, safe, and suitable for food contact applications?
April 7, 2026MUNICH – The SERENADE project reached a significant milestone this week by presenting a key innovation at the BSH Sensor Technology Day 2026 (April, 16th). The exclusive event, hosted at BSH Headquarters, brought together leading experts from academia, top sensor suppliers, and BSH’s own business and technology leaders to explore the future of sensor technology in home appliances.
A central highlight of the showcase was the “Smart Sensor-Enabled Food Freshness Container,” a prototype developed by JLM thanks to the research developed within the SERENADE project. This smart container represents a major step forward in our mission to combat household food waste.
The prototype, which is currently at the Proof-of-Concept stage, integrates advanced sensor technology to continuously monitor and detect the freshness status of food. It aims to provide a simple, reliable at-home system that:
- Eliminates the guesswork in assessing food freshness.
- Reduces food waste through active monitoring and smart alerts.
- Empowers consumers to make more informed decisions about their food.
Initial lab tests have already proven successful, with the system reliably detecting spoilage indicators in foods like meatballs throughout their storage lifecycle.
Presenting this tangible prototype to a high-level audience of internal and external experts marks a crucial step in validating the project’s direction and fostering the collaborations needed to bring this technology from the lab into our homes.
